ICI Assignment 1 - History, Future and Issues of the Construction Industry

In our very first Introduction to Construction Industry Assignment, we are required to produce 3 A2-sized mounting boards which will serve as infographic pop-up presentation posters. Joe, Gwen, Natalie, Jia Yii, Jennifer and I are part of the same team. Out of the 5 topics given by Ms Normah, we selected the topic 'History, Future and Issues of the Construction Industry'. We chose this topic as we felt that there is a vast amount of information related to this topic, which will help us a lot.

We organised our team into 3 mini-groups. Jia Yii and Jennifer were in charge of gathering information related to the history of the construction industry. Natalie and Joe were in charge of of the issues of the industry while I and Gwen were assigned to search for data about the future of the industry.

We compiled the data collected into a mindmap

OUR BOARDS:

In the process of completing the boards, I learnt how to cut polystyrene neatly and efficiently. Skills such as cutting polystyrene can be enhanced through practice. Furthermore, it is true that effective communication and linguistic skills are needed in group projects. Alongside with that, we gained certain knowledge regarding the construction industry by finishing this assignment. Researching and learning is undoubtly an enjoyable thing to do.

ICI Assignment 2 - The Building Team

The primary task of this assignment is to interview key people in the construction industry. Each team will receive a type of consultant or developer from a list. My group got 'Structural Engineers'.

Structural engineers are also civil engineers. The field structural engineers specialize in is considered a specialty discipline within civil engineering

The members of my group are Jennifer, Jia Yii, Gwen, Natalie and Joe Onn. We named our team 'Evolution'. In this assignment, we are required to interview a structural engineer and produce a documentary video. Each member would also need to prepare a magazine based on this assignment.

After some discussion, we decided to interview Mr Chen as his projects are more structural based and he has a site available for us to visit.

After selecting Mr Chen, we made an appointment with him. Since he has a vacant period of time on 24 May 2014, we interviewed him that day. Before proceeding, we had a meeting about what questions should we ask Mr Chen. It is always better to be prepared.

This assignment gave all of us some insight about professionalism. We are grateful that we got the chance to interview Mr Chen and get to know his personal perspectives. Being a structural engineer is never an easy task. They carry huge responsibilities and are in charge of the design, safety and practicability of the building.
Furthermore, we learnt that structural engineers must be sensitive to the requirements of society, ethical at work and have positive attitudes in order to be successful. They must be good problem-solvers too.

ICI Assignment 3 - The Project Brief

The brief requires us to form a group of 2 and find a space in the campus to initiate a small construction project. The size of the land shall not be more than 30m x 30m. The brief also requires us to propose ONE project that serves one of the following purposes:
1. Recreation area
2. Study Enhancement Area
3. Rest area
4. Food and beverage (dining area)
5. Commercial area (exclude food and beverage)

The FINAL project

Verbal communication between members are enhanced throughout this assignment. It is important to have all team members communicate well with one another and clear about the finalised idea of the whole project to prevent mistakes. Besides, I learnt how to make gun diagrams and analyse risks and constraints involved during the construction process. Planning a construction project is not easy as there are many things to be considered. This project gives us a slight taste of it.
